How I did it: I searched online to find the closest animal shelter.  I went to their website and filled out a volunteer application and waited for a response.  It took a few days before I got a response but it was worth the wait.  I went to an orientation and a training session, and now I'm learning on my own and hoping to learn a lot more as I go along!

Lessons & tips: Be persistent.  Sometimes seeing the hours they require and things like that can be discouraging depending on your schedule, but they're most likely very flexible for volunteers.
