How to learn to sail
How I did it: We ran into some people who are members of a sailing club on a nearby lake. They mentioned that there were too many captains and not enough crew. We offered to learn to crew. These people have since become friends and we by their standards are now valuable crew members!! My husband loves it and we have sailed almost every race day and as often as possible on social sails.
Lessons & tips: PAY ATTENTION to where the lines go while others are using them and WATCH the sails and how they react. KNOW where the wind is coming from at any moment (it changes a LOT!) Hint: bring gloves, the ropes will not be easy to grip. And know that your natural concern for the boat flipping over is healthy, but no need to panic unless the captain is... sailboats can heel far over and still pop back up.
Resources: West Marine, Google, talking to sailors, but mostly just paying attention and not treating it like a power boat- it's much more interactive and fun than that.
