How I did it: 8 years of formal study at home + a semester of university exchange!  Six months of studying in french does the trick! I know my french is still not perfect, but I understand almost everything and can converse easily and without too many, "comment dire... en francais?". ^_^

Lessons & tips:   A tip that my french lecturer gave me was, once you step off the plane in a french-speaking country, you must refuse to speak english!  I know so many people who have spent the same amount of time in France as me, but who still aren't confident in speaking as they spend the whole time with english-speaking friends, or french friends who want to practise their english.  Don't do it! take every opportunity you get to speak the language!
