How to donate blood
How I did it: When I was in junior college, I had determinedly walked to the school donation drive to donate blood. But the doctor let me go as I had low blood pressure. It was sad because I am terrified for needles and just as I conquered it, my BP did not cooperate. Since then, each time I wanted to donate blood, for some reason I would not be able to go. Either I was sick, I had returned from overseas, was on medication, way too busy, etc. etc.
Finally last week, I made an appointment with the Blood Bank with the fiance. And we went.
When we got there, we registered. Went through a medical screening. SIgned a declaration. Pricked my finger for more testing. Got into the room and my legs were shaking like mad. The nurses were very sweet.
And then they gave me an injection which hurt a little. And after that, I felt nothing. Nothing at all! Didn't feel the cathether going in or coming out. 20 mins later I was out of there feeling very happy for myself and my happy pink dressing and had coupons for drinks and food. Unfortunately I got out too fast and almost fainted. Apparently it was a bit of anxiety as well (???). Was wheeled back in and rested for 10 more mins!
I am definitely going again in 3 months.
Lessons & tips:
- Just do it!
- Make sure they place you're donating blood is an official blood bank and they use new needles/equipment!
- Breathe and just do it! :)
- For added measure, bring a friend along.
- For those afraid of needles, look away or close your eyes and think of something else. You really won't feel a thing.
- The sense of fulfillment is worth it!
