How to find a job
How I did it: After university I signed on to Job Seekers benefits (relevant to the UK). I wanted to get into work as quickly as possible though. This was very hard to achieve. I live in an economically deprived area so jobs are very hard to find unless you know the right people.
I also have an arts degree so I tend to be instantly laughed out the room if thats mentioned ;)
I applied for loads of jobs using local and national websites. This covered jobs in my chosen industry and some rubbish jobs too.
I finally got a job but not in my chosen field. However I am relieved and happy to have the job so I can have the money I need to pursue other goals. I will keep job hunting but now I can focus on vacancies in companies that actually interest me.
It's not a fairy tale ending but the current economic climate doesn't leave alot of room for such things. I'm hopeful now that I can keep pursuing bigger and better things :D
Lessons & tips: - Keep going. It is very difficult right now.
- Keep your sense of humour. Getting down about it really doesn't help matters.
- Try volunteering. It improves your CV and keeps you busy.
- Research your chosen career. You will find loads of useful recruitment websites.
- Be willing to take a rubbish job until you get the right one. It means you get some money - always useful ;) you reduce the gaps in your CV and maintain recent references for your next applications.
