How to get over my fear of accidents while driving
How I did it:
* Got a GPS:
With it, I can keep hands on wheel, and if
I get lost, it finds my way again. It helps me know what lane to be in
when I'm unsure. I feel safe with it, when in a new area.
* I realized roads are just lines to follow. That's really it. :
Even that big mass of road "loops" are just lines to follow. I follow them and that's it. I remind myself that if I picked those road loops apart, they don't even run into each other. They just look like monsters. :)
* I stay aware:
Staying aware is easier than I thought. The more I drive, the more I know what to be aware of.
* I know it's better to be safe than sorry:
If unsure of
what lane to be in, or what road to take, I take comfort in knowing I
can always turn around and get the right one. It's ok. Also, I know
always have brakes. Just because it's a road, it's not illegal to slow
down drastically if something appears dangerous.
* I don't allow impatient drivers to pressure me:
If I think
it is unsafe for me to take a right-on-red at the moment, the car
behind me could honk until the cows came home for all I care.
* Drive:
As they say, practice makes progress.
