How to expand the range of Urbanhonking
"I made friends with people in another town through the internet."
How I did it: When I lived in Astoria Oregon, I helped my friend Heidie put on a rock show called Catch That Beat. It was organized by Jona Bechtolt of Y.A.C.H.T. and it was really fun. It took place in a little clubhouse in a beautifully forested city park at the crest of the ridge that runs through Astoria. It was a one day mini-festival of bands from Jona's circle of friends. They were an incredibly talented bunch and they fascinated me. They felt like distant young cousins of mine through the extended family of K Records. I had a sense of their energy and values from the inside out and I wanted to spread it around.
One of the peculiar things they had in their life was a homemade blog server called Urbanhonking that hosted a cluster of postings from their swirl in Portland. My goal here was to encourage them to expand their horizons.
Though I can't claim all the credit for it, I do feel that I contributed to this process by simply being an open and sincere friend to this swarm. In time, we have expanded the range of this project.
