I just did this for my 40th birthday. I can’t wait to read it in the future to see how much my thoughts change in 5 years. I put mine on my blog, you can read it here:

How to write a letter to myself that I'll open in 5 years
How I did it: I sat down with a notebook and a pen and just started writing. I thought about where I want to be in 5 years, all the things I want to have done, the places I want to have seen by then. I asked myself questions about where I was and how I had achieved my goals. I also wrote down some hopes about how I'll feel about myself and the situation I hope to be in. It'll be very interesting to open it in 5 years and see what I expected out of life.
Lessons & tips: Just let it flow naturally. I started out pretending I was writing to someone I hadn't seen in a great while, and went from there. Think about what you want from life now, where you want to be in 5 years, and basically have a conversation with yourself.
Resources: A blank notebook, a pen, and some free time.
