How to improve my general knowledge
How I did it: For many years, I've
been living through experiences rather than knowledge. As far as I was
concerned, it was enough, but as I started to open myself to others, I realized
I could merely speak the name of many many things, but not explain them or talk
about it for more than a few minutes. And it frustrated me. It did because I
have a deep desire to inform and help others, and even if I was able to do much
for myself, I wasn't for others.
So I started slowly to improve my knowledge in some fields I knew I had friends
interested in. I learned about movies, politic, chemistry and put more interest
in what I was studying at school. It was not that much, but as for almost
anything, once the bullet as started to roll down the hill, it managed to
generate the start of an avalanche. I changed my opening page on Firefox for Cyberpress
(an online newspaper) and each time a subject interest me, I try to read a
minimum on it. I bought a board on which I write the most interesting lines I
learn and questions I want to investigate. Now that the routine is started, I
am now learning continuously.
Lessons & tips:
- When you learn
something that you find interesting, ask yourself: Am I able to explain it to
someone who has the same knowledge I had. If not, find why and work on it! - When something interests
you, try to read at least one article or book on it. - When, reading or
talking to someone, a question you can’t answer rise, write it somewhere you
look often. Eventually, you’ll understand or learn the answer and automatically
associate it with your knowledge!
