How I did it: I always knew I wanted to be a doctor. Cliche but true. I was that kid running around the school yard with the plastic doctors kit, banging on knees and sticking bandaids on people.
In 2003 I sat the entrance exam, finished my highschool finals and went for the interview. Only 2% of people will ever get into medical school (apparently) but I didn't let that deter me. I have always been driven and ambitious. When I was offered a place at medical school; I was happy, my parents were happy - mostly they were happy to see me happy! They never pressured me, which I think helped. I work best on my own terms.
Six years on I have finished my bachelor of surgery & bachelor of medicine. It's a good feeling. I haven't ever had second thoughts. I know this is what I'm meant to be doing and it gives me joy to know I can make a difference in even just one person's life.
Lessons & tips: Don't let anyone ever deter you from following your dreams. Always have faith in yourself.
