How to make new friends
How I did it: I did it by being willing to do things outside of my "comfort zone." Without taking chances of some sort, you're very unlikely to develop good friendships. There are risks. But the rewards are worth it. An example: A person who I now consider a good friend used to invite me almost monthly to go to a drumming circle. I felt uncomfortable about it so I kept making excuses. I finally agreed to go figuring "what's the worst that could happen? I could be so horrible that they kicked me out and told me never to come back." So I went. I had a great time, and this activity has become one of many that I really enjoy doing with my new friend.
This is just one example.
Lessons & tips: Be willing to do something that someone else really enjoys in order to enjoy their company. This is a give and take, obviously, but the first step is being willing to do something new and maybe even a little scary.
