How to identify and photograph 43 birds

Have you considered having some sort of blog where you document birds that you photograph?

Did I ever mention…

…that you have really good ideas?

Moi?

Thank you Simon. Well I do think it’s a great idea…. I would love to follow Dan’s bird blog.

Yup, you.

I’ve noticed over the years I’ve known you. Your brain cooks up some great ideas and you come here and announce them without any fanfare. I like that.

Thanks!:)

It’s nice when people enjoy them.

I'm thinking about it...

I was thinking about doing it once I got a better camera to take better pictures.

For now, this goal kind of serves as a way for me to document some basic facts about the birds I have come to recognize. I have a couple of dozen entries more to write, but it’s probably too excessive to post them all at once, and I’m also waiting to get better photos of some of the birds (I have much better photos now of some of the birds I already wrote about like Cassin’s kingbird, red-tailed hawk and black-crowned night-heron).

I do keep a “life list” of all the birds I’ve seen, and I do keep a spreadsheet where I note all the birds I’ve seen during each birdwatching trip and what the particular conditions were and any other pertinent observations. It’s not a bad idea to move this into a blog, though I’m not sure anyone would read it.

Simon’s right, you do have good ideas. :)

Post bird photos regularly. Improve it as you go. We will read it. You will make money!! :)

I think it’s a great idea!

thanks!

I feel a lot like the only “Bird Nerd” under 80!

I have taken multiple multiple excellent shots of bird with a small “Lumix” it fits in the back pocket of my tank top when running…

You can see some of them here:

I have upgraded to an SLR< but of course impossible to go running with that!
One of the coolest things I’ve seen this year was the Roseate spoonbills feeding at dusk on Merritt Island Florida. (If you haven’t been, great place for a run and birds and birds and birds)...

I’m feeling much better about my bird spotting…. I thought I was the only one…

I sort of wondered the same thing...

I’ve been on a couple of outings with the local chapter of the Audubon Society, and a majority of the members did seem to be of retirement age. So, it is kind of exciting to see “younger” people into it too.

Your photos are truly awesome! I particularly liked the one on your blog of the sandhill crane flapping its wings. It seems like I should plan a birding trip to Florida sometime. We don’t get cranes in my part of California. Neither do we get spoonbills That was another great photo, by the way, of the spoonbill in flight that you posted under my other entry. I haven’t had much success in getting good bird in flight shots, hence the desire for an SLR

come on to Fl

We do get a fair amount of shore and wading birds. I’m not good at identifying small birds…they move so quickly…

Do you know about the Great Backyard Bird count?

check out http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/

Its in a few weeks in Feb, you can count, and also submit photos. I was shocked, I won 3rd place in the Habitat category…sort of annoyed my Mother who is a better photographer than I!

My prize today was a Nesting Osprey…but have not downloaded yet so photos may be awful… but it was great to see!

Happy Birding and Happy Running…..

counting...

Thanks for sharing the info on the Great Backyard Bird Count. I’m definitely in. I try to go birding at least once a week, and I keep a spreadsheet noting all the species I identified during each trip as well as the time I was out, what the weather conditions were and other noteworthy observations. I count the number of species I see, but I haven’t tried counting how many of each species I see. So, that should be interesting…

So, I’m definitely a “bird nerd”...

I thought

you would like it.

They will love you, as you will not get the ID’s wrong. There is a feeder and a Nest watch program as well. My Mom keep sme informed of all the “watch events”

take a look at this one

not my best work, once it saw the big lens, it responded as if the lens was a huge eye….and moved to the back portion of the tree :(

TG

Cool, TJ!

Those are some great shots!

And- you certainly aren’t the only one. I’ve been planning on adding a “Identify 43 birds that are new to me” goal for a while, but I never seem to have room to add any more goals!

Hi TG

having room for goals is always a struggle!

TG

It is for me!

Partly because I have a lot of long-term goals on my list.

And partly because I’m always behind on posting on my goals ;)

Mysteriously Odd yet Fascinating Is shining is all her individuality and GREATNESS!

I really enjoyed your goal!

I love birds, and I have never done this, but it was enjoyable to read your entries and possibly open my own avenues to look for different birds as well.
