How I did it:
I found a local Turkey Trot online and registered there. For the 9 or 10 weeks prior to the race, I jogged 4 days per week, increasing my mileage slowly and taking easy weeks twice. My clothes aren't fancy and my shoes aren't pretty, but the running is good for me, and the race was very exciting and fun.
