How to get paid to take photos
How I did it: Milwaukee Area Technical College has a very competitive and nearly impossible program centered around the View Camera, a large clunky outdated contraption which you are left to basically figure out on your own. They made it so impossible to check a camera out that as soon as you fell behind, you were SCREWED.
The experience was worth it for the fact of the experience and I feel like I know more about the physical hands-on aspects of photography (ie light metering, film developing, printing), but there were just so many nuances that it seemed impossible to master all of them in one semester.
My teacher said it was their job to weed out the half-hearts because they can't send 100 photographers out into the world every semester. Everyone's a wannabe-photographer these days and I know I'm good, but I guess I doubt if I have the cut throat mentality that is needed to make it on the business end of the world.
And so for now, I am keeping my eyes to myself so that I can enjoy being a wannabe.
Lessons & tips: Save up a lotta lotta money. Make friends early in the semester.
