How to travel to Santorini, see Thera volcano
How I did it: I knew I was getting a fairly sizeable bonus at work. But really, I just made a decision to. I always said if I found I only had x time to live, I would first go to Santorini.
Well I realized, we all only have x days to live. What was I waiting for?
So I made a decision to go, and made it happen. My bonus covered only about 1/2 the cost. And I ended up scheduling it for a really inconvenient time as far as work. It was costly in pet care, and in borrowing from my savings. But it was worth every penny.
I researched and found a company that coordinates volcano tours, and once I had that and a flight booked, the tour company took care of the rest (see www.volcanodiscovery.com).
I'll never forget riding in the taxi to the airport. Eric and I did this together. And I kept thinking, "We are really doing this. I am going half way across the world to THERA. Right now, I am in a taxi. Going there."
And that was it. Decide. Save. Get in a taxi and go. Just go.
I want to do it all again - maybe over and over around the world.
Lessons & tips: I highly recommend volcanodiscovery.com. Tobias, our guide was great - the service, from the hotel to the site seeing (and historical background), photography advice, and local food recommendations was GREAT.
Decide. See what it would take to do. And do.
Oh - and go see Amoudi Bay. There is a little store, down on the left at the bottom of the stairs, where there is a very nice man who might play Frank Sinatra in his CD player if you ask. And a great attached restaurant a little further down. Get the fava paste.
