How I did it: I started out going about the wrong way. I was looking through the classifieds and couldn't find squat. Then I decided to go ask a company I rented through before which has an excellent reputation but had no listings posted. I let them know I was a return customer and pestered them to death and found my place that way.
Lessons & tips: By all means, look through the classifieds, but go through friends and family too, and look into any great experiences they (or you) had and go back to those landlords and let them know that's why you're looking into them.
