How I did it: Well, at first I learned guitar, then wrote some songs, then bought a macbook and protools.  Realized how much I suck at recording and finally put my money towards recording a 5 song demo at a small studio.  TOtally WORTH IT.  

Lessons & tips: If it's your first demo...please don't do it yourself.
