How I did it: I bought a new car that was stick shift even though at the time I couldn't drive a stick shift yet.  They dealership wanted $3,000 to "upgrade" to an automatic transmission.  I figured for three grand I can stop being lazy and finally learn how to drive stick.  Bought the car (with stick shift) had my boyfriend drive it home and one day he and I went out for a driving lesson.  It took a few hours and I'm still not the smoothest stick driver in the world (the boyfriend ended up "adopting" the stick car and I primarily drive our other car) but I'm confident that I can drive both of my cars.
