How I did it: One of my professors encouraged our Motivation and Leadership class to seek out mentors.  Having corresponded once in the past with one of my favorite authors, I decided to give her a try.  She was very helpful and accepted the task of mentoring me right away.  Since then (June of 2009), we have been e-mailing, with me asking questions and her giving professional and personal advice.

Lessons & tips: When choosing a mentor, be bold!  Dare to contact your personal heroes (if they are still alive, of course) and be honest with them.  Tell them what you want out of the relationship and then follow through with that.
