"You have to be dedicated to do it, but it will be a relief later on."
How I did it: Its important not to stay in the ivory tower of a lonely genius. I joined various research teams and not just in my own university, its even more important to be part of international teams, at least at my field. In this way you get constant inspiration, feedback, motivation. And you get a lot of work done without even noticing it.
The other secret is to divide the goal of that size into manageable pieces. There were days, I didn't aim to work more with my dissertation than to finish just a few sentences. But I made it a daily routine. In this way, I actually managed to finish it with one and a half years. The years before it I was drifting and not really doing anything directly contributing to this goal, except taking a few courses.
Resources: research communities of various kind; dedicated supervisors; supportive crowd of people around me at the last months before finishing it.
