How to take a volunteer vacation by cootiesarerad

"It was the most amazing thing I have ever had the opportunity to do in my entire life."

How I did it: It started off with me being fired from my job for lacking confidence, and being 'too shy'. My parents thought it would be a good idea to spend the money I had earned from my job on doing some abroad volunteer work. We discovered the website www.projects-abroad.net where I chose to do a month in Ghana helping to build schools. I stayed with a host family in a small village called Kwamoso, which is about 2km away from Mamfe in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
I'm planning on going back to the same place and doing a building project again sometime in the next few years.

Lessons & tips: Try to save up as much money as you can, doing some traveling to different areas of the country you are volunteering in will provide a great experience of the country, and some amazing memories.

ispeakforpeace is making my own way.

This is truly inspiring. I’ve been on the site for about 3 hours now, and am absolutely DYING to do the sea turtle and coastal ecology project in Mexico. Problem is that it’s about $3400 for a month :( Did you try to fund-raise money or just use your savings?
I seriously would LOVE to do this…what an awesome experience!

I just used my savings. My parents helped quite a bit though, they paid for my flights, and gave me money to spend while I was there. I just paid for the actual project, and all the things I’d need for the trip, including vaccinations and the visa.

The price is definitely a little higher than you really want to pay. But the money goes towards your transport to and from the airport in your chosen country, your accommodation, all your meals (I got 3 meals a day from my host family), the wages of the employees who run the organisation, and any supplies needed for your project.

I think some other volunteers did fund raise money to go, but I never really asked them about it.
