How I did it: I learned to tolerate pain. I learned to surrender to the healing process, to be patient, and to "listen" to my body and respond appropriately. I learned to diagnose and treat myself. I learned to love my body, even when I don't have much control over how it works, looks, or feels. I learned to have hope and acceptance. I learned to ask for what I want and need ... visitors, help with errands/chores, the option of working from home, encouragement, etc. I learned to live in a messy home when I wasn't well enough to care for it and I couldn't expect others to do all of my work on top of their own.
Lessons & tips: I learned that other people are scared of long-term injury to the point that they deny it exists. They may think you are nuts or that it's your fault. That way they don't have to consider that it could happen to them. Just remember it's not your problem what other people think. Just concentrate on yourself and people who are supportive.
Resources: Prayer. The phone, so you can keep in touch with people while you're immobile. The Internet for information on injuries and rehabilitation. A friend, if you're lucky enough to have one who can be there for you. A spiritual program such as a 12-step group. A therapist. A variety of activites you enjoy that don't require mobility. I did not find doctors very helpful (possibly because I don't have health insurance), but I did see 3 doctors and used some of the information they provided. It's worth a try.

in completing this goal.
And I hope you soon get to run and dance.
I busted my ankle several months ago and can totally relate to the simple things like learning to ask for help or learning to live in a messy home when you just can’t do the things you used to. I hope that by now you are running marathons and dancing up a storm!
