How to travel alone
"Now I know I can do it, nothing is holding me back"
How I did it: The idea to go on a holiday alone came into my head after a breakup. But it also scared me, so I did it in steps. That first year I joined a group vacation. I didn't know anyone, but wasn't "alone" technically. The year after I finally went alone, one week in Paris. A city where I'd already been to a few times and a language I sorta speak... So I knew I could probably cope - and could take the train back home in an instant if needed. But I made it through, and now I know that I can do it I will do it again :)
Lessons & tips:
- If you're a bit scared of going alone to a foreign country you can build up to it. Explore a city on a daytrip on your own, or first join a group vacation.
- If you're travelling alone as a woman check if your hotel is in a safe neighbourhood so you can walk back alone at night.
- Keep in mind that hotel costs will probably be higher, hotels often charge extra (or the 2 person fee) if you're alone.
- Plan some (backup) activities so you have something to do in case you feel a bit lost on your own.
- Don't feel awkward having dinner by yourself. People on business trips do it all the time, and no, nobody is looking at you. (It took me some time to get over this hurdle myself)
- Enjoy yourself! Now is the time to do what you want!
Resources: I used tripadvisor to check the hotel reviews from solo travellers.
And I asked tips on 43places from people who'd done the same in Paris: they gave me the confidence to do it!
