"start with what you like and branch out"
How I did it: first, i gained a thorough understanding of nutrition through working with a registered dietician. i think that knowing how your food came to be and how your body uses the food really helps.
i gradually added more fruits and veggies to my meals. i started off by adding a couple baby carrots to my dinner. i like broccoli so i added some to my lunch. eventually i started having apples and raspberries with my breakfast. just remember that the change will not happen overnight. it is something that may take weeks or months.
you can start off with dried fruit such as cranberries or raisins. apple sauce and frozen veggies are also a good way to transition. there are veggies available at the market already washed and sliced that are very convenient if you don't have time to prep them yourself.
begin with fruits and vegs you know you like and then branch out. try new things from the produce section. at the farmers' market you can find new things and even try them out since some vendors give out samples. you can buy one or two pieces and experiment at home.
if you spread out the fruits and vegs throughout the day if it very easy to get the recommended amount :)
Lessons & tips:
- keep plenty of fresh fruits and veggies on hand
- have a variety
- explore local farmers markets
- learn about nutrition
- try new recipes
- add more gradually
- balance!
