How I did it: My husband came to the US on a fiance visa, which meant that we had to get married within 90 days of his arrival. Getting married is actually pretty simple: find a civil officiant, apply for a marriage license, get some witnesses, pay the fees, and hooray, you're married!
We had planned on having a real wedding at some point, but since everyone already knew we were married and I didn't feel like spending thousands of dollars, we haven't yet. I was never the type to fantasize about my wedding day, so this worked out splendidly. We'll have a 5 year anniversary party or something. :)
