How I did it: I asked information on forums, visited manufacture sites (read all the manuals too!), compared prices and looked deep inside to see why I was getting a synth.
Lessons & tips: You really need to see WHY you are getting a synth and for what
purpose. I believe, depending on your budget, time and goals, a
keyboard could be enough. But if you love modifying your sounds you
should get a synth or a workstation.
