How to go to fiji
"WANANAVU!!! Au domoni iko, Viti! :)"
How I did it: For my gap year, I wanted to volunteer somewhere abroad so I looked into it on the internet and found Lattitude Global Volunteering, who offer placements to volunteer in Fiji.
So I applied for it, had some interviews, paid the fee and off I went :).
While I was there I learned some Fijian, learned some Fijian sign language, helped disabled kids pass their class 1 exams, made some best friends, went snorkling for the first time (what a place to do it!), met the owner of Fiji's biggest department store and travelled to a Hindu temple in his car boot, fell in love and gained 4lbs!
Basically, I had the best 4 months of my life and I can't wait to go back!
Lessons & tips: Don't just spend your time at a resort, get your hands dirty and experience the real Fiji! Make Fijian friends, visit a village, have some proper grog seshes till the early hours and shop at the markets rather than supermarkets.
Suva is worth a visit but if you're spending a long time there, it really isn't cheap!
Never take the vendor's first offer at the handicraft markets - when they see a tourist they double the price!
