How to learn to drive
"It's been a long time coming, but I am glad that I did it."
How I did it: I am well over 18, so this will be a little different then the teenage driving needs.
First, I read the states "What Every Driver Must Know" booklet. I found it a bore and that I was not retaining all of the information, so I took an interactive online class (vdriveonline.com--highly recommended) as well to learn the same information.
I then took the written test at the secretary of state so that I could get a temporary permit. This costs money, so be prepared. I passed the test and got a permit. I had to wait 30 days before I could take the driving test, but that was fine since I did not really know how to drive.
I did not have anyone to teach me, so I paid for driving lessons. There are lots of driving schools so do the research for the best prices. I got four lessons over a period of a few months. You can do this in the thirty days, i just did not have the money all at once. If you do have someone to drive with at least some of the times, then you may not even need to pay for lessons.
I made sure that my last lesson was close to my driving skills test so that I would still be in good practice. The time during lessons was the only opportunity that I had to drive, so this was very important. You may want to even ride around the neighborhood where you will take the driving skills test to get familiar with it. My lessons happened to be in the same area as the testing center, so it really helped.
I did not have anyone to borrow a car from, plus I wanted to use a car with which I was familiar, so I rented a car from the driving school to take my driving skills test. I took and passed the driving skills test, took my certificate, permit, and id to the secretary of state and took my picture for my license!
Lessons & tips: Be patient and calm. Shake the nerves. Nerves were my main issue. Pump yourself up before a lesson by saying to yourself (I am a great driver, I can do this, I control the car the car does not control me, etc.).
Listen to your teacher. the odds are that they have been driving for a while and know what they are doing.
Keep at it! Driving is one of those things that gets easier and better with practice, so do not give up!
