Sammie Thinking I should "Do It Now!"

Hi Magpiesong, Sorry I missed your comment. I only just noticed it today after a notification for Todd’s comment popped up in my email!

I’m still very happy with my kindle, but then I don’t just read on it exclusively. It’s loaded up with a lot of free ebooks and old classics, quite a few fiction novels I’ve purchased from Amazon and a few business titles as well.

I find reading on it a lot easier than a standard paperback. For some reason I don’t seem to get as much eye strain? It’s also lighter, easier to hold and gives me a choice of what to read without having to lug a heap of books around.

On the other hand I still buy a lot of paper books. Mostly colour books with a lot of photographs – like my art journaling books.

Price-wise I haven’t been too worried, they are a little dearer than I would prefer to pay but when you compare the price with purchasing a physical book here in Australia or getting one posted out from Amazon the price becomes very competitive. One digital book usually costs me less than the postage on one physical book.

Kindle

My dad had me order a Kindle for my mom from him for Christmas this year. I also had to wrap it for him. She really likes it and has already bought four books and started reading them.

Maybe it’s just me though, but I think I’ll always prefer an actual print book. The texture of the pages between my fingers as I flip them elicits a sensation of accomplishment. Being able to turn down a page corner or underline a passage just wouldn’t be the same on an electronic reader.

I agree with you on the tactile sensation point. It does feel completely different and there are definitely some books that I’d prefer to read in a physical paper based format.

On the other hand I find the kindle much lighter and easier to hold. I also love the notes feature. I always cringe to do anything to a paper book, so being able highlight a bit I like on the kindle and mark it as a note is great. My notes then sync to the kindle s/w on my pc.

One thing my kindle will never replace though is lazy Saturday mornings spent rummaging through the local thrift bookstores hoping to stumble upon a treasure :-)

molliemoonlight Can't keep up!

I wasn't sure I'd like a Kindle

I was initially not convinced as I love books, however I’ve heard such good things and decided to buy one. I was adamant that I would still buy books but thought that the convenience of being able to carry several texts in a lighter format was the selling point. When it arrived I was still a little skeptical that reading it wouldn’t feel the same. But my lightbulb moment came when I was absorbed in what I was reading and in a moment of absentmindedness, instead of turning pressing the forward button, I actually started to try and turn a page! I was delighted!

I shan’t abandon books completely, but the Kindle gives me a convenient alternative. I suppose it’s like downloading music. At first, I didn’t want to do this and HAD to buy the CD and then upload that. Now I am more comfortable buying and downloading an MP3 track, but if it’s a song, album, or artist I really want, I’ll still buy the CD.

Sammie has gotten 4 cheers on this entry.
