"Is that all he wanted?"
How I did it: I listened to what he said. When he said you kids never listen to me I always felt defensive like we were no good to him. I had to hear what he was really saying. He said he tried to teach us but we would never learn. Was he implying that we were stupid? OK Dad.... I get it... he has cancer.... he thought his kids shouldn't smoke because dear ol' dad is going through it! So I heard him, and I quit. He nearly cried, I never heard him sound so happy in his life. He told me that it was the greatest accomplishment of my life and he freely told me he loved me, which he never, ever does...he sounded like a different person. I thanked him and let him know that because of him it would be easy to never smoke again.
