How I did it: with help from friends and family and a lot of shopping around and haggling for better prices on things like floorboards and kitchen ware/ white goods.
Lessons & tips: Always know exactly what you want tradies to do and don't be scared to tell them exactly what you want - it's only harder to tell them to change it later, easier to make sure that you are all on the same page from the beginning even if you have to draw it and write it down.
Resources: the internet was invaluable - however most tradies respond to phone / sms a lot quicker than email.
