How to write a novel
"I didn't know I could do that."
How I did it: Participating in NaNoWriMo helped a lot, as did having a roommate do it at the same time. Not only was I driven to complete my novel in less than 30 days, but the added competition my roommate provided made it even more rewarding for me. I learned that when you're writing a draft, it's QUANTITY, not quality, that you want to strive for initially. Once you have a solid draft (mine was ~60,000 words), then you can do whatever you want with it. It's hard to edit something you don't have already.
Lessons & tips: Be bold. Even if your writing is crap to start, it won't end up that way when you're done editing it to your liking. Just write and don't look back.
