How I did it: I took a NAUI class, then I went to Florida to do my open water dives. I ended up getting a PADI certification, and I can get my NAUI one as well once I contact my old instructor.
Lessons & tips: Taking a class is usually more expensive than doing PADI elearning (their online course). I haven't done their online course, but I think the class with time in the pool made me a lot more confident than I would have been if I just learned online.
