How I did it: A friend of mine came to visit me in New York and helped me move to Maryland at the end of June.  Within a few hours of getting to Maryland, we headed out on our trip.  We had an atlas to guide us (which was way more fun than using a gps), so we'd just pick a spot on the map and go there.  We made our way south, sleeping in cheap motels and campgrounds along the way.  We were pretty far south by early July, so we decided to make New Orleans our goal for the holiday.  We ended up getting the last room in a hotel a block away from the French Quarter, spent the day wandering around the city, watched the fireworks over the Mississippi River, then headed over to Bourbon Street for some fun...ha.  The next day, we slowly began making our way back north.

It was one of the best trips of my life. :)
