How I did it: The college was organizing trips and Habitat for Humanity in South Carolina was one of them.  I signed up, got in a van and rode to the site.  I had the chance to put up a roof and siding and paint.

Lessons & tips: Go with a group you're comfortable with because you work closely with others.  It's preferable you're in shape because there's some heavy work that is done for hours at a time.
