How to learn to sail
"Scary on the open sea at first, a good instructor is everything. The sea is beautiful and powerful, and deserves our respect and a little bit of healthy fear."
How I did it: Lessons at King Harbor on a 25' footer. Lots of man-overboard-procedure practice. Kept a GPS on the boat during the lessons and could look at my tracks across the coast afterwards. Don't forget the sunblock!
Lessons & tips: Don't worry about that ASA program, it's an unrealistic pace made to tease people into the promise of learning overnight. Learn at your own best pace. If an instructor rushes you, drop 'em, and find another. Safety first. Take solo lessons - tried with 4 friends at first and it just wasn't enough tiller time. Don't forget to have fun with it!
