How to get rid of clutter
"A freeing experience; like losing weight, but easier!"
How I did it: Hired a professional organizer to get started. Once you get started, it's easy to keep going... the momentum, and how great it feels, keeps you going.
Moving long distance and being able to take only what was most valuable helped, too.
Lessons & tips: 1) Keep the memory, NOT the item!
Take a picture of item and keep that, not the item.
2) Work with an impartial friend or professional as you go through things. Someone who has no attachment to your stuff. Much more effective than going it alone, and more fun, too.
3) Pick type of item (like all the papers, OR all the clothes, OR all the toys) and gather them into one place to go through them. When you see all of one type of thing together, it's easier to weed things out.
4) As soon as you fill a box of stuff to donate, donate it right away, so none of it ends up back in your house.
