How I did it: I booked a couple of nights in Stonetown on the internet, then walked around and found the place for me once I arrived.  The markets were good, though touristy and not dirt cheap, but it was the experience that I enjoyed... the smell of cloves, the brightly colored clothing, the narrow alleyways winding around through the old, old buildings... it was very pleasant.

Lessons & tips: Don't expect the ammenities of home, but relax, smile, and enjoy!!  Zanzibar is a wonderful place.
