How to live in a foreign country
How I did it: How I did it: It just kind of
happened. I had always wanted to live in another country so I was very
excited at the opportunity and open to the experience. It started with a decision, some planning and goodbyes, and trusting that I would figure it out as I went along.
Lessons & tips: You realize that all over the world, fundamentally, people are the same.
Be
prepared for times of separation from loved ones, but see these times
as opportunities to discover how strong your own resources are.
'Home' really is where you make it.
Emigrating is a logistical nightmare. It helps if you are organized.
Ex-pats tend to be a bit more outgoing that the average person. The ones who aren't... stay home.
Don't
miss the opportunity to make friends with people from other countries
and cultures, and maybe go a little out of your comfort zone. You will
also end up with people to visit and play host to in the future,
scattered around the globe!
Google Earth is a great way to familiarize yourself with a place before you arrive!
Chat
to other people from your country or a familiar culture once you
arrive. They will have been in your place once and so will be more than
happy to help you.
