How to stay sober by drywhitewhine

"I'm still the same person I was, only without the hangovers and wasted money."

How I did it: Well, I was never an alcoholic or a "problem drinker" - assuming there's any difference - but I decided to become a teetotaler for the same reasons I decided to become a vegetarian: I'm something of an ascetic, I want to be healthier and more fit, and I like to challenge myself.

Because I never had any alcohol dependency, giving up the drink was hardly noticeable to me. I'm not much healthier or better off, simply because I never drank that much or that often in the first place.

Nonetheless, I am saving a lot of money because, let's face it, booze expensive! Also, it's uplifting to realise that I can still be considered the "life of the party" on my own, without a couple of shots of the old Dutch courage to lubricate the social gears.

Lessons & tips: Giving up alcohol completely should be very easy. If it's not, then, I hate to break this to you, but you either are - or are quickly becoming - an alcoholic.

If you find yourself giving it up easily, yet still drinking in social situations (assuming your intention is to stop entirely), then you probably have some insecurity issues making you cave to peer pressure.

Having a drink now and then is perfectly healthy, but if you decide to stay 100% sober 100% of the time and your friends don't support you or take you seriously, get new friends!
