How I did it: Ok, to be honest my hair is currently green, but I completely forgot this goal was on my list and my hair was back to its natural colour before I started dying it again. So it's not cheating or anything!
I dyed it red ages ago and it has literally taken this long for it to go. I've had a few disasters in the past involving me getting impatient and putting a different coloured dye on top of the dye already on my hair. (I once accidentally turned my roots bright red while the rest of it stayed black. Somebody told me I looked like a vampire that hadn't quite finished changing from a bat, and I was traumatised.) So I thought I might as well wait for as long as it takes to fade before I start going crazy with the hair dye again.
Lessons & tips: Tell everyone you know what you're planning to do, and that way whenever you're out shopping with someone and you're tempted by a packet of dye they'll stop you from buying it. It can get a bit annoying (I was itching for new hair after the first month) but you'll thank them in the long run.

After a year of 2008 filled with hair disasters (a perm in June and discoloration gone awfully wrong in October), I dyed my hair of a color as close as possible to my natural one – light brown – and I’m now 2/3rds of my natural color in. I’m itching to dye it but I won’t because feeling my natural, soft, shiny hair for the first time in 15 years is priceless. You keep it up! Write me anytime for support. I know it’s hard!
