How I did it: I decided that for my birthday, March 27th, that I wanted to celebrate my son's birthday since his was snowed out in January.  I secretly messaged a ton of our friends and his through facebook and email and phoned several others. After he got back from church a couple of my friends were over and he thought nothing of it until his first friend showed up and I told him Surprise! Happy Birthday! I invited your friends over and you made your own birthday cake! (I had gotten him to make 'my' cake the night before saying that I didn't think I should have to make my own birthday cake)

Lessons & tips: Always get definite answers and follow up with people a couple of times prior to the party. I take for granted people will arrive and the parties are always smaller than I hope for.
