How I did it: I started in a parking lot to practice shifting, and then moved to driving around my streets. When I was comfortable with that (and wasn't killing the car all the time) I started to drive once or twice a week to classes and back.
Lessons & tips: Find out what you're having the most difficulty with and focus completely on that. If you're having trouble learning when to shift, drive around a familiar neighborhood. If you're having trouble starting from a stop, head to a parking lot. Otherwise, you're pretty much learning two things at once (how to drive and how to drive stick) and it might slow things down.
