How I did it: knittinghelp.com was my saving grace!  I started out by trying to learn from this one book, but it was so confusing!  I found this website, and the girl who does it is amazing!  She explains everything so well, and in no time I had it down.
I'm still working on my first scarf, but I'm feeling more comfortable with my skills and can't wait to move on to more fun projects!  :D

Lessons & tips: Make sure you pay attention to what you are doing!!!  I have a friend who is a very skilled knitter, and she can knit without looking.  I felt cocky one day and thought I could do the same, but I messed up pretty bad and had to start over.
I now know to be patient, and in due time I will be as good as my friend.
