How I did it: By continually putting myself out during the auditions for solos. Yes I've had beatboxing parts by myself in the past but those aren't solos.
My moment came for a duet then solo on the Mark Wood arrangement of the Joe Cocker version of "With A Little Help From My Friends." the Mark Wood Experience came to my school and I auditioned and got it. There was success.

Keep putting yourself out
Not getting a solo doesn't mean your bad, just not the sound being sought after
