How to learn to swim

Comments:

Thank you! I got a monthly membership (just $10) for the pool and plan to go in the evenings now to practice.

Next, I want to learn to jump into the 9ft end and come up, do the dolphin-kick thing (both feet are together and wave up and down like a mermaid fin) and come up for air after every 2 kicks, swimming sideways, the froggy kick (breast-stroke). And then when I am very experienced, learn to dive off a diving board.

There are swimming classes going on all the time at the pool in the mornings, so instead of paying for an intermediate or advanced swimming class, I’m just going to watch how everyone else does it and copy them. I basically had teach myself how to swim in the beginners class haha.

:P

I thought you might say a marathon open water swim ;)
The only thing I ‘know’ about swimming is that being more efficent is the big thing so when swimming front crawl get your arm to vertical as quick as possible – it’s not all power it’s efficiency.
Guess the only other thing is keep at it, improve your tech and speed and distance and you’ll be knocking out K’s in no time :D

Ohhh, I see :P. Yes, I still need to practice technique, speed, and build endurance as you said. Wow, K’s in the water? Hadn’t thought of that as a goal. I like it! It would be useful if I’m somehow stranded in the ocean and I need to swim a long distance to shore. Right now, I swim one lap and then rest a bit before swimming again haha. I’ve only been swimming for about 10 hours total and I need to improve my breathing. My friend had the same problem before but can now swim 50 laps nonstop. I will keep increasing the number of laps I swim in the pool. Thanks!

Just keep going – I’ve swum 8k in the pool before – 4k in the morning then a break and I got bored so I went back and did another 4k. So like three hours and a bit each time.
In terms of breathing I’d heard that if you pick a stroke pattern just stick with it and that’s the best way as long as you’re happy you should swim better basically. :)
