I had a disturbing conversation with my mother a few weeks ago, concerning my sister and her university application. She’s decided she wants to follow in my footsteps. You’d think parents would be thrilled to potentially have two doctors in the family. But no, my father isn’t happy because he just wants her to do a bachelor’s degree, which is shorter and hence less years for him to support her. Secondly, he has been harping on at her about how she should have applied to Oxbridge, and how she shouldn’t go to medical school where I am (so far she has an offer there and is waiting to hear from everywhere else). BUT SHE DIDN’T WANT TO GO TO OXBRIDGE, which is why she didn’t apply. He seems to be translating success as going to Oxbridge. To be honest, I don’t care now that I didn’t get in there (5 years down the line) and I didn’t think they did either, but it’s just reopened old wounds. There are so many universities which are good, and you can be proud of your children wherever they go, because they can still flourish! It just upsets me. I suppose the good thing is that it has REALLY made me want to succeed and have a decent career in medicine.
