Finger Puppets!!!

I decided to make little finger puppets for my three-year-old nephew today…you know, just because. :)

Since I had lots of foam sheets on hand, went ahead and used that…plus, I like that the material is soft…so…perfect for toddlers! :)

PROS: lightweight, soft, flexible, easy to cut
CONS: a little difficult to glue pieces together that do not lie flat

For My Sister...

I created a flower wreath for the first time today. :D

Next time, I’ll choose a bouquet with small- to medium-size blooms since the gigantic ones are just waaaaay too big (if using more than one). That is something I didn’t consider at first but, oh well…it’s all part of the learning process. :)

All Done! Yay!

When I first approached this project, I thought about the different ways in which I impact the environment. This is when I realized that my habit of buying online ends up creating so much waste due to just packaging alone. Sure, I recycle it all but I recently learned that just because some trash finds its way to a recycling center, it doesnt mean that it will be turned into material that can be reused. In fact, a lot of the time, it just ends up in the landfills anyway.

So then, for my first draft I came up with the concept of transforming trash into something new. However…I wasn’t really illustrating that in my first draft so I had to go back to brainstorming. I was fustrated for a couple of weeks. How would I get this message to visually make sense and in a new way?

Then…just out of nowhere…the concept finally hit me. Funny how creative inspiration works sometimes…

Thus, my new concept is taking out the trash. However, rather than taking out the trash to the curbside or to the dumpster like we all usually do, I’m pushing the idea of ‘taking out the trash’ out of the landfills. The visual message then, is that creating less waste (trash floating out of the landfills) really begins with us (symbolized by the woman). How it’s achieved is a question I leave up to the viewer but at the same time, I subtlely provide one possible solution (the use of both recycled materials and other materials that would otherwise end up in landfills). For example, the material of the woman’s hair are strips of plastic grocery bags and the material I used for some of the objects floating out of the landfill are from leftover gift wrapping or online shopping packaging.

Draft 1...

Let’s see how this thing evolves…

Hanging Mobile

Because I love watermelons and Seattle rain…

Paper Lotuses

I wanted to get a shot of my sister’s fish swimming underneath but unfortunately, they only swam underneath when I wasn’t nearby :(

Sharing the Beauty

Decided to string several cranes and butterflies on a tree outside… Oh and, don’t worry, I got permission from the tree first. :D
