Hubby won tickets... 2 weeks ago

to the Le Paul Tribute show at the Ryman in Nashville. Steve Miller was brilliant. Had no idea he was Les’s god son until this show. Also, Wynonna was a welcome surprise. I had no idea she had such soul as a blues singer. Seriously, she was almost as good as Ann Wilson & Bonnie Raitt! Charlie Daniels and JD Souther smoked. And of course, the Les Paul trio was incredibly talented…

Les will be missed. Both hubby & I were good friends, so it feel to remember him, especially at the Ryman.

Heart at The Ryman... 3 months ago

Ann Wilson isn’t sexy. In fact, she took the stage in what appeared to be sweat pants & a pair of white bedroom slippers… But that didn’t seem to matter to anyone at last night’s PACKED show. Every time she stepped up to the mic, the audience ROARED. The Ryman was actually VIBRATING from the applause. It went on & on & on, and even though it was the most outrageous applause I’ve ever seen ANYONE get at The Ryman, I’m sure we all left wishing we could’ve given them more.

Alison Krauss, one of Nashville’s favorite singers, made a guest appearance to sing Nancy’s part on These Dreams… I hate to say it because Alison is wonderful, but last night she stood in Ann’s shadow…

Ann showed everyone that she still has the pipes on Mistral Wind, one of my personal favorites. Barracuda was right on, as well. They did a lot of 80’s Heart songs, which I suppose might be kind of satisfying for them, but honestly, Ann could’ve been singing nursery rhymes & I think she’d still have managed to hold us all captive. They did some tremendous covers of Led Zep, of course, and a version of The Who’s Love Reign O’er Me that brought down the house.

The new band is tight & high-energy. Nancy is still gorgeous as always. But it was Ann who held the real power, even in sweat pants & bedroom slippers.

Big weekend... 7 months ago

Friday night was Michelle Malone at The Flying Monkey, a funky little arts venue, in an old cotton mill. The setting was fantastic, but the music completely blew our minds. I’ve seen a lot of live music – a LOT of live music – but I’ve never seen anything like this girl. She can burn up a guitar & sings the blues like she was born doing it.

She’s heading out on tour. I think she’s starting in LA next week & will be working her way up the coast, then back through Salt Lake City, Denver, etc. If you are at all into Sheryl Crowe, the Black Crowes, Bonnie Raitt, or bluesy-rock in general, I highly recommend checking her out. I almost hate to use the cliche, but there’s no better way to say it…. The girl ROCKS!

Tonight we saw Diana Degarmo, Natasha Borzilova, Linda Davis & Michael Peterson at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. I’m not a fan of American Idol, so I had no idea what to expect from Diana. She WAILS in all the right places & her lyrics have both heart (lots) & guts (in smaller doses). The crowd went crazy after every song.

After the show, her manager looked over at me & said, “You’ve got to hear her when she really belts it out, like in her show in L.A.” I can’t believe it gets better, but he swears it does in her Back To Bacharach & David show at the Music Box in L.A.
Natasha Borzilova used to be the lead singer for the Russian-influenced band Bering Strait. Her voice is soft & lilting, and she clearly has the soul of a poet, but she can also groove. She somehow managed to make breaking up funny in her song, “Real Fight.” She finished up the night with a beautiful Russian folk song, sung in the original language. The crowd was riveted.

Linda Davis is a sought-after session singer and seasoned performer. Linda’s daughter, Hillary Scott, sings with the up & coming band, Lady Antebellum. Linda is such a sweet person, and she has that powerful, made for Nashville voice that so many try to imitate. She did a smoking version of her song, “That’s Just Love,” made famous by Bonnie Raitt – a HUGE crowd pleaser.

Michael Peterson was more typical of singer-songwriter genre. Most of his songs are soft-spoken & insightful, but he can raise the roof when he wants to. His song, “I Don’t Care” was one of my favorites all night, another funny break up song.

The session musicians that sat in were fabulous. Nashville has some of the best session musicians around. They were able to pick up a lot of these songs on the spot & make it sound like they’d been rehearsing them all week.

That’s the weekend so far…

Tomorrow we’re going to listen to a friend’s band play a little outdoor venue that’s just up the road from our house. It’ll be the first time we’ve gone to see them, so we’re looking forward to it.

Nashville tonight... 9 months ago

It wasn’t a big show, but the booker wanted us to come check our some of his writers at a showcase… We saw maybe half a dozen writers tonight, most of them ok, & two of them really good…

The booker, Jim, seemed ok. He treated us well & even asked if we wanted us to sit in for a couple of songs tonight. I had a lot more fun than I expected, but I was still nervous… My throat hurts from singing with too much stress in my throat…

We had tickets... 11 months ago

to a NYE show at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta tonight, but after rmuch discussion, have decided to do the mature thing & stay home…

We scored a nearly-impossible dinner reservation & a hotel room on the same floor as the band… From past experience, we know that we would’ve gotten to party with them… They’re really nice people & they play some pretty mind-blowing jazzy-jammy-jam type music… The show will probably last ‘til almost daylight… Although we’re sad to miss it, we know a little more rest is in order…

We offered the tickets to a young couple here in town & they’re supposed to come get them in a few, so maybe somebody will be enjoying our $150…

That’s a total of $350 in tickets we’ve eaten this holiday season… The original plan was to burn up the roads seeing bands we love, but it seems our bodies had other ideas…

On the positive side, we’ve had lots of time to play with our Christmas toys… We still got to see two great shows… And we also got to go see hubby’s daughter & her family, so it’s been a pretty good holiday, in spite of our being sick…

The Blind Boys of Alabama... 12 months ago

played the Princess Theatre, a small-town 60’s style movie theatre… We were in the 10th row, but the hall was so small that row 10 means about 30 feet from the stage…

The Blind Boys are, of course, blind, and well into their 80’s… They’re up for their 8th Grammy this year, & it is well-deserved because they are PHENOMENAL entertainers, interacting with the audience just enough to make you feel a part of the show…

Jimmy Carter, their front man, is very low key, “Now we’re going to play a song that won a Grammy. We hope you like it.” And they proceed to play that boogie woogie roller coaster ride of a gospel tune that knocks our socks off!

It was their Christmas tour, so they did some seasonal stuff like Go Tell It on the Mountain,White Christmas, and a version of Silent Night that was so moving it took me on a long trip back through my own Christmases past… Their song, Pray on Christmas will probably be one of our holiday favorites…

Amazing Grace, done to the tune of The House of the Rising Sun was an unexpected and tasty treat…_

The real barnburners were Devil in the Hole & Free at Last,_upbeat songs that had the whole place on its feet screaming & shaking & clapping along… It was a whole lotta fun for just $20, and we even got to meet the band after the show… not _just us, but everybody… They just hung out signing autographs & joking around with us…

All in all, the Blind Boys were one of the best $20 shows I’ve seen in a long time! I think they’re playing with the Boston Pops later this month… Now THAT would be a show!

Brian Wilson... 13 months ago

Now I know what it feels like to drown in harmonies… ;)

The band did an entire set of oldies as their second encore! The Beach Boys were a little before my time, but I appreciate great composition & arrangement when I hear it… Besides, Brian is still a kid at heart & that makes him easy to love…

I took this picture from our seats…

Seriously one of the best shows of my LIFE!

New Year's Eve... 14 months ago

It’s been several years since we went out for New Year’s Eve, unless hubby happened to be playing somewhere… This year we’ve decided to make an evening of it, so we’re going to see Soul Stew Revival in Atlanta’s Fox historic Theatre…

Soul Stew is the Derek Trucks Band with Susan Tedeschi, a horn section, & Derek’s younger brother on the second drum kit… It’s a big show with lots of very complex and well-executed jazz & blues… Susan has one of the best blues voices I have ever heard, right up there with Bonnie Raitt… Derek is fast becoming a guitar legend, after playing with Clapton on his 2006 Crossroads tour…

The opening act is Sun Ra Arkestra, a self-described “intergalactic big band…” It should be interesting to say the least, since they aren’t from around here… (In fact, they say they TRULY ARE from other galaxies)... Ok, it seems a little strange, even to me, but I have nothing against dancing with aliens, if the groove is good…

We’ve got a room at a luxury hotel that’s just around the corner from the venue & just made dinner reservations for a hip little restaurant that’s also within walking distance…

It’s going to be the biggest night out that we’ve had in quite awhile & we’re both looking forward to it…

AND
If you’re going to be in the deep South and don’t have plans for New Year’s yet, this just may be your show…
