...can be a royal pain in the ass. When it goes well, it goes very well. When it goes wrong, everything goes wrong…the siphon needs restarting, the hydrometer (with sample inside) gets knocked over, there’s air in the siphon (which means I have to go back and top up bottles) and I’m sober. On the bright side, the Arrogant Bastard Clone is in bottles. Cleaning up, however, will wait until another day.

...is long overdue! The second batch smells like Arrogant Bastard, which is how it ought to smell. I have GOT to get it in bottles.
Not only am I a good parent (the brewery is shiny stainless steel once again), but the first batch brewed at this house is wonderful!! Excellent flavor, nice balance, finishes well, gives good head (important in beer and other arenas) and has a nice coppery color. Time to order carb drops and bottle the other batch, then start a third batch, to bottle with the INSANITY of ROTC field problems calms down in two weeks. This is a first!! The first batch of beer in a new place has turned out not just well, but pretty darn good! So we light a fire in the chimenea tonight, since southern Indiana is chilly enough after dark to do that, quaff some beautiful homebrew and think about some of those other Things on the list…
I confess, I’m an awful, awful, bad parent. My child of a brewing system…my BEAUTIFUL, stainless steel, six foot tall, sounds like a F16 jet engine, child of a brewing system has been dirty for a week. I’m a bad, bad man. And now I have to bottle. This weekend, I clean that place up. I’m committing to this now…
Real life forces things to take a back seat to other things. I absolutely must get the brewery cleaned up tonight!!!!
OK, so two weeks ago, I brewed batch numero uno in the “new” house on the kickin’ new system. I bottled it Saturday (while watching the flash flooding…interesting counterpoint) and resealed the fermenter, saving all that great, viable yeast. So, I brew the first attempt to clone Arrogant Bastard. Don’t ask. I checked it 24 hours later. Fermentation had been so vigorous, the airlock had blown out of the fermenter! :) Life is good!
Every time we move, I notice that it takes a batch or two of beer before I understand teh local microbiological dynamic enough to account for it. Big day today, as it was the first batch of beer in a long, long time and the first in this house. The setup is super! Everything just fits together well, from start to finish, including clean up. I’m hoping this is a drinkable batch! Cheers!
